….Says Obaseki is the best man for the job                                                                                   ….Commends peaceful election and shaming of Wike’s imported militants
….Confers the title of ‘OGBUAGU’ of Edo Politics on Adams Oshiomhole.

image001The people of Edo State have been commended for their wisdom in voting convincingly for Mr. Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), during Wednesday’s governorship election in the state. Rivers State APC made the commendation in a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, in which it congratulated Governor-Elect Obaseki and Edo State APC for their victory at the polls.

“There is no doubt that Edo people have made the right choice because Mr. Godwin Obaseki is the best man for the job. He is tested and trusted and will continue the good work which the APC Government in Edo under the watch of His Excellency, Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole, has done in the past almost eight years. We urge the incoming Obaseki Administration to toe the developmental vision of the Comrade Governor and provide the good people of Edo State the type of governance they deserve to continue to enjoy,” Rivers APC said in the statement issued in Port Harcourt by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

The party congratulated all those who made the Edo election peaceful, noting that, by so doing, they have put Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who sponsored political thugs with a view to rigging the election, to shame. “INEC, the security agencies, the Edo State Government and the great people of Edo State have proven that with commitment and proper planning, we can make our country great and even export our brand of democracy to other African countries,” Rivers APC said.

“We are so pleased with the functionality of the Card Readers’ machines and believe that the National Assembly should set in motion the machinery for a law formally approving electronic voting for future elections in all parts of the country,” the party added.

Finally, in demonstration of our happiness over this great feat by the people of Edo State, the Rivers State APC confers the title of OGBUAGU (Killer of the Tiger) in extension Destroyer of the undemocratic elements in Edo on Gov Adams Oshiomhole for demonstrating greatness and shrewdness in the politics of Edo State. For defeating the Igbinedions in their own Local Government, “Ovia North East and the Raymond Dokpesi in his Etsako East LGA” and most importantly for causing the Edo PDP Leadership to accept defeat even before INEC concludes collation and declaration of the entire results simply present Adams as the true OGBUAGU of Edo politics. We congratulate him for securing Edo from the hands of Treasury looters and misguided politicians.

We urge the great people of Ondo state to emulate the Edo people during their own gubernatorial election and save their people from the dying and destroying PDP spirit.

Ekiti NASS members hail Fayose, teachers over State’s first position in NECO

Ekiti NASS members hail Fayose, teachers over State’s first position in NECO

Members of the National Assembly (NASS) from Ekiti State have hailed the State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose on the State’s first position in this year’s National Examination Council (NECO) Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), saying the feat was a confirmation of the governor’s total commitment to the return of Ekiti State lost glory in the education sector.

The National Assembly members said they were particularly happy that Governor Fayose was able to perform the same feat that he performed during his first tenure, adding that coming from 10th position in NECO in 2015 to 1st position in 2016 as well as from 34th position in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2014 to 11th position in 2016 was an achievement that all sons and daughters of Ekiti State should be proud of.

Rising from a meeting with Governor Fayose on Saturday, the NASS members, which include Senators Biodun Olujimi and Duro Faseyi as well as House of Representatives members; Hon Akin Awodumila, Hon Segun Adekola, Hon Kehinde Agboola, Hon Ayodele Oladimeji and Hon Thadeus Aina saluted teachers in the State for collaborating effectively with the Governor Fayose-led government to revive education in the State.

They said; “Our teachers know who their true friend is and they cannot but give their best when they have Peter Ayodele Fayose, their friend as governor. They once experienced a government during which they were not sure of what will happen to them in terms of security of their jobs the next day.

“To us in the NASS, we are happy that in NECO, Ekiti State was able to move from 10th position with 74.5 percent performance in 2015 to 1st position with 96.48 percent performance in 2016. This to us is not a mean feat, and it must be placed it on record that Governor Fayose is always associated with success in the education sector in the State.

“It should be placed on record that the immediate past government of Dr Kayode Fayemi met Ekiti State performance in WASSCE at 33 percent. The performance however went down to 22.9 percent in 2012, 29 percent in 2013 and 25 percent in 2014. In 2015, Ekiti performance rose to 37 percent and now 42 percent in 2016.

“As he did during his first tenure, Governor Fayose’s commitment to the education sector  made him to organise an education summit early last year and we want to place on record the role of our leaders like
Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), the Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaiye and others in making the summit successful.

“Today, we are happy that results of the education summit are being seen and we salute our teachers’ friendly governor, Ayodele Fayose and the entire teachers in Ekiti State.

“We are sure that with the continuous strict adherence to the recommendations of the education summit and the various intervention programmes already introduced by the Fayose-led government, which aided the State’s impressive performance in external examinations, Ekiti State will totally regain its lost glory in education soonest.”

“Destruction of Dr. Lloyd’s House: A Fulfilment of Rivers’ PDP Leaders Boasts against APC”

Posted on September 25, 2016. Filed under: Press Release | Tags: |

BEING TEXT OF PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS, APC, RIVERS STATE CHAPTER HELD ON SUNDAY, 25TH SEPTEMBER, 2016 AT THE STATE SECRETARIAT, 43 FORCES AVENUE, OLD GRA, PORT HARCOURT

Gentlemen of the press,

On the 21st of September,  2016, at about 4:25pm, Hon (Dr) Chidi Julius Lloyd received a phone call from his security men in his country home  AKPABU, a community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, that unknown gunmen numbering about 20 in various military camouflage stormed the community on 10 motor bikes and shot sporadically into the air, scaring members of the community and finally broke into his premises and threw dynamite into his compound  housing a chapel, a hall and a two-bedroom guest house, fully furnished.  The inferno that followed burnt down his personal belongings such as library and other valuables.

The APC recalls that since the 2013 crisis that engulfed the RVHA, Dr. Chidi Lloyd has been subjected to all forms of threats by the PDP and agents of Rivers State Government under Gov. Nyesom Wike.

Following the unfortunate incident in the RSHA, Dr. Lloyd was arrested, detained and charged to court for the offence of attempted murder among other charges. When the then Hon. Attorney-General, Worgu Boms Esq, in exercise of his constitutional powers, took over prosecution and eventually discontinued trial as a result of the fact that the police authorities then had made it impracticable for trial to continue as the complainant had approached the Port Harcourt division of the federal High court seeking for an order to stop the release of the case file to the HAG.

Curiously, on May, 2016, the Hon. Attorney-General of Rivers State, Chinwenwo Aguma, SAN, filed a criminal information in the High Court of Rivers States, before Hon. Justice Adama  Iyayi-Lamikaran, to review the Nolle Prosequi entered by the Hon. Worgu Boms way back in 2013.

The trial is currently ongoing with an interlocutory order to the police to produce Dr. Chidi Lloyd to take plea even when no process was served on him.

Arising from that development, Dr. Lloyd has since appealed the order despite all efforts by Justice Lamikaran to frustrate him from exercising his constitutional right to appeal. Subsequently, Dr. Lloyd has also petitioned the Hon. Chief Justice of the Federation and the Chairman of the National Judicial Council, NJC.

Despite the pendency of the matter at the court of appeal, Justice Adama Laminkara has refused to stay proceedings in the matter.

Only on Thursday, the 21st of September, 2016 at about 10 am, the Hon. Attorney-General of Rivers State, Chinwenwo Aguma, SAN had boasted in open court that since the police, a non-party in the matter, had refused to produce Dr. Lloyd, they (the prosecution) will ensure Dr. Lloyd appears in court to take plea “their own way” and six hours later, the country home of Dr. Lloyd was bombed and razed down.

We have painstakingly drawn this graphic analogy so that it will be clear to the discerning and fair-minded Rivers people and Nigerians who the perpetrators of the arson on Dr. Chidi Lloyd’s country home are.

The APC views this incident as part of the fulfilment of the boasts by leaders of the PDP government in Rivers State to teach the APC and their leaders a lesson. One of such is the ongoing persecution of Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree on trumped-up charges before their court in Port Harcourt despite attempts by the Nigeria Police to properly investigate the matter before charges are filed.

Similarly, same last week, the landed property of the State Women Leader, Evangelist Caroline Nagbo was invaded and vandalised by suspected political thugs who are now on the run.

The APC calls on all well-meaning Nigerians including the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the State Director, DSS and all security agencies to come to the aid of Dr. Chidi Lloyd as his life and those of his family members are in GRAVE danger just for being an APC leader in Rivers State. We urge relevant security agencies to painstakingly investigate this latest assault on Hon [Dr] Chidi Julius Lloyd to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice promptly.

The APC has also taken notice of spate of bombings and destruction of pipelines in the Niger Delta by the Avengers and other restive groups. We condemn these acts of sabotage and urge the perpetrators to desist from such in order not to worsen the nation’s present economic recession.

CNPP Press Release: CNPP Kicks Against Jibrin’s Probe, Reiterates Call for Independent Investigation of Budget

CNPP Press Release: CNPP Kicks Against Jibrin’s Probe, Reiterates Call for Independent Investigation of Budget

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has rejected the move by the House of Representatives to probe Hon. Abdulmumi Jibrin over his efforts at exposing budget fraud in House, reiterating its call for independent investigation into the allegations “rather than engaging in the persecution of the whistleblower.”

The House Speaker Hon. Yakubu Dogara and other principal officers of the House of Representatives were named in a budget padding and abuse of office allegations by Hon. Jibrin.

The CNPP in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu described Jibrin’s probe by the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges as “a witch hunt and harassment of whistleblowers to the detriment of the ongoing war against corruption by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.”

“The CNPP insists that the Speaker and the fingered principal officers of the House must step aside until they are properly investigated as they cannot be the Judge in their own case and yet lay claim to equity.

“For us, the probe of Hon. Jibrin by Ethics and Privileges Committee of the House, with an obvious predetermined script to suspend him, is nothing but a blackmail by the hunted hunting the hunter in a bid to cover up a gross allegation made by the lawmaker.

“How can the war against corruption succeed when the principal leadership of the House of Representatives noticeably pays lip service to the anti-corruption drive by the Buhari government?

“Rather than embark on the probe, the House would have compelled the Speaker and the principal officers named by Hon. Jibrin to submit themselves to an independent probe panel comprising of relevant security agencies and if cleared, they can sanction the lawmaker for false allegation. Is this not what is most reasonable to do by the House?

“What is it that the Speaker and the principal officers are afraid of? Why are they quick to probe the allegation by some members who claimed their reputation has been damaged by Hon. Jibrin’s allegations, when the allegations have not been investigated and found to be untrue? What is it that the Speaker and his co-accused are struggling to hide from Nigerians?”, the CNPP asked.

“We, therefore, call on the Speaker to immediately disband his probe committee and submit themselves first to an independent investigative panel for open probe of the allegations against them. It is only then can any probe of Hon. Jibrin may be acceptable to well meaning Nigerians.

“If the House is truly concerned about its image, clearing the abuse of office and budget fraud allegation against its Speaker and other principal leaders should be more troubling to them at this time”, the CNPP said.

Tai Results: PDP huffing and puffing empty air – APC

Tai Results: PDP huffing and puffing empty air – APC

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, said the party’s attention has been drawn to the relentless noise on radio, television and in the newspapers by the Rivers State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, through its State Chairman, Felix Obuah and the Publicity Secretary, Samuel Nwanosike attempting to foul the air over the release of March 19 rerun election results for Tai Local Government Area.

The APC in a statement signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Senibo Chris Finebone said, the APC has “so far, repeatedly reminded the PDP that the Electoral Act clearly specifies how results of elections including legislative polls are released and by whom at all levels. The Tai rerun election results were announced by the statutorily recognised INEC officials at the appropriate levels. Whether the Commission had issues to establish about those results is inconsequential, internal and merely administrative.”

The statement reads: “The PDP has always talked about a dubious and largely suspect court order they obtained restraining INEC from releasing the said results. We would like to advise the PDP to confirm whether they can obtain an order against action that has already been taken. Indeed, they should ask themselves whether someone can obtain a court order against the delivery of a child that has already been delivered.

“Assuming without conceding that the PDP has a subsisting court order restraining INEC or its agents from releasing Tai results, under what circumstances can a political party or indeed anyone take an order restraining a statutorily established government entity from performing its constitutional roles? The PDP must tell Nigerians whether it can obtain a court order restraining, for example, the Rivers State House of Assembly or National Assembly or National Population Commission from carrying out their statutory functions.

“It is the conviction of the APC that the said court order the PDP has been making reference to exists only in the imagination of the PDP leaders in Rivers State. We challenge them to publish that court order for public scrutiny because they have placed the matter in public space.

“Again, assuming without conceding that a genuine court order restraining the release of Tai rerun election is in the possession of the PDP, what are the detailed specifics of such an order? What is the challenge of the PDP in returning to court to get INEC charged for contempt of court instead of threatening crisis and breakdown of law and order?

“The APC believes that repeated threat of crisis by the PDP follows in the character of their leader, Gov. Nyesom Wike who said during their second ill-fated national convention that he was allowing peace to reign because of the presence of visitors in the state. By that statement, Rivers people became aware why peace has never reigned in Rivers State especially when we did not have visitors in the State. It helped us to understand why killings returned to Rivers State the very day the NBA conference wound up especially the gruesome killing of an NBA member, late Ken Astwete a few days later.

“The APC condemns the unwarranted threat to law and order by words and actions of PDP leaders in Rivers State. There is no doubt that this sort of behaviour was responsible for the spate of violence that has enveloped Rivers State and brought her infamy since 2014.

“We wish to remind the PDP that after the rerun elections of March 19, INEC has released results in favour of the PDP in many parts of Rivers State. APC members had either taken it with equanimity or peacefully approached the courts to seek redress. We have not threatened anyone or the peace of Rivers State.

“The APC calls on relevant security agencies to take particular notice of the drum of war being beaten for the umpteenth time by the PDP over matters they have the clear option of seeking judicial intervention if they believe in democratic tenets.

Wike, tell the world how INEC wants to rig the rerun elections – APC

Wike, tell the world how INEC wants to rig the rerun elections – APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has expressed surprise to hear Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers State make another wild accusation to the effect that he had uncovered plans by the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] to rig the forthcoming rerun election in favour of the opposition.

“We were not surprised because such tales coming from the governor fit perfectly well into his usual past time of trading on unfounded accusations just to prepare the ground for launching electoral mischief” the APC said in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Senibo Chris Finebone today in Port Harcourt.

Continuing, the party said, “If indeed the governor is serious about his discovery and he was referring to the APC when he made reference to the opposition then we challenge him to make public his findings. The APC believes that it is mere smokescreen by the governor to divert attention from his readiness to deploy from his unholy book of electoral mischief and the APC is ready for him.”

The APC called on the INEC not to be distracted by such diversionary antics, but ensure that every aspect of the forthcoming rerun elections in Rivers State is transparent and credible to prove Gov. Wike wrong.

On the statement by Gov. Nyesom Wike claiming that he intimidated Gov. Adams Oshiomhole with his presence in Edo State before the last botched election, the APC said, “we believe without doubt that Gov. Wike exported militants and hoodlums to Edo State to rig election and cause mayhem there. A local saying has it that a man that has the penchant for bad sleep takes the habit to anywhere he goes.”

“It is sad that Gov. Wike is steadily imposing and reinforcing on Rivers State the notorious brand image of a state that thrives and possibly exports violence and everything negative. The APC believes that that image does not represent who true Rivers people are; indeed, the governor is on his own. Rivers people will recover their state from today’s vandals and the world will see the true image of Rivers people as bequeathed by the founding fathers of our dear state” the statement further stressed.

On the widely reported amendment of some laws to enable the governor appoint local government caretaker committees perpetually, the statement noted that what the Rivers State House of Assembly has been goaded into doing is a naked rape of democracy reminiscent of the dark ages and, in any case, “we are politically back to the dark ages.”

“Those embarking on this political journey will ultimately find out that they will be held to account for their actions someday” the statement finally declared.

‘Only APC Will Develop and Secure Bonny, Rivers West’, says Asita

‘Only APC Will Develop and Secure Bonny, Rivers West’, says Asita

image001The deputy governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress [APC], Rivers State in the 2015 election, Hon. Asita Honourable has declared that the only political party in Nigeria that has developmental and security plan for the people of Bonny and entire Rivers West Senatorial Zone is the APC.

Honourable Asita who represented the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the DG, NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside made this declaration Saturday while speaking at the APC Rivers West Senatorial Zonal special rally which took place at the Industrial Unit Field, Bonny as part of preparation for the forthcoming rerun election in Rivers State.

“Again, we are here to tell you that it is the APC that can provide good things of life for the people of Rivers West especially the Bonny-Bomu Road, Ring Road, pipe-borne water just to mention a few. When the federal government is willing to help us and we elect opposition members, would the federal government be able to help us freely?” Asita asked rhetorically.

Continuing, Hon. Asita assured the people that it is only the APC federal government that will bring about genuine and effective security for the people of Bonny and the entire Rivers West communities.

“We want security; do you want Wike’s security or that of the Federal Government? There are many undecided voters, now take the message to them, we have tried PDP for 16 years and we were not better off, let’s try the APC. By the time the crocodile finishes smiling, our water ways would be safe. If you vote for APC, those armed robbers you previously saw, you shall see them no more,” Asita stated.

In his own speech, the Rivers South-East Senatorial Candidate, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, stressed that there was unity of purpose in the forthcoming rerun election, stating that Rivers people have resolved to pitch tent with the APC and work for the victory of the party which in turn would provide good future for their people and their children.

“I know it has been a long and torturous journey but nothing good comes easy; work hard and plan hard. Victory is sure by the grace of God,” Abe said.

Earlier, the State Rerun Election Committee Chairman, Engr. Sampson Ngeregbara had, in his speech at the occasion, recalled notable political leaders Bonny and Rivers West produced in the past who brought finesse and colour to politics in the state insisting that they were good leaders.

“Leaders are people who show others direction; they are likened to technicians and for us in APC we have that leader in Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. We cannot be in opposition to the centre. In Rivers State, we are relegated as minorities but we as Rivers West Senatorial District should align to the centre. This is our message for you today,” Ngerebara declared.

Among other APC leaders who spoke to the huge crowd of party faithful and enthusiasts was Chief Lolo Ibieneye, the Chairman of the Rivers West Senatorial Election committee. Chief Ibieneye charged party faithful to be steadfast and not be deterred by the killings occasioned by the desperation of the PDP. He asked members to rise for a minute silence to honor the departed.

In his own solidarity speech, Hon George Tolofari, the APC Leader in Bonny LGA, drew the attention of party stakeholders present to the loss of party members after the 2015 general elections till date. He appealed to the federal government to expedite action on the Bonny-Bomu Road and provide adequate security on the Port Harcourt-Bonny sea routes in the interim. He urged party faithful to remain strong to the very end.

“It’s not over until it’s over; the APC in Bonny LGA shall continue to do all that is possible until victory is achieved,” Tolofari admonished.

The presentation of the candidates was done by the State Party Chairman, Chief [Dr] Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, represented by the State Deputy Chairman, Prince Peter Odike.

“We are here today to present and project our candidates to the people of Rivers West once more ahead of the October rerun elections. We know all things flow from the government at the centre and it would be most unfair for us to deny this government support, since it is incumbent upon the government to support our people. He went ahead to introduce the candidates amidst cheers from the crowd,” the Chairman said.

Prayers were offered for the candidates as the party rostrum was declared an altar of God and the candidates were prayed for and admonished to let the light of God show in all they do as political leaders.

The APC candidates of Rivers West Senatorial Zone participating in the forthcoming rerun election are Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Amachree [Senate]; Hon. Dawari George [Akulga/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency]; Hon. Aye Pepple [Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency]; Hon Ben Horsfall [Asari-Toru State Constituency II]; Hon. Eldred Lulu-Braide [Degema State Constituency]; Hon. Henry Halliday [Bonny State Constituency] and Hope Barango-Tariah [Asari-Toru State Constituency I]

Semenitari to light Calabar 2016 Carnival light

Semenitari to light Calabar 2016 Carnival light

Ag.MD/CEO, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, will perform the lighting ceremony for the 2016 Calabar Carnival.

Cross River State Govenor, Prof. Ben Ayade, today, while hosting Semenitari at the state Executive Council Chambers in Calabar, bestowed the special honour on her. Ayade, in his trademark hairstyle, described Semenitari as a symbol of how the strong can help the weak.

While praising Semenitari for saving Cross River State from total economic collapse through her intervention on the critical Calabar-Itu Road, Gov. Ayade said that the state economy, which mainstay is quarry business, had begun to lose to Ebonyi State as buyers and truck owners found the road impassable. “But with your intervention, our quarry business has begun to climb again, putting more money into our purse”, Ayade stated.

Ayade, who said Cross Rivers State would host her to a special reception for her special treatment of the state, predicted that Semenitari would enjoy higher national duty having performed well in NDDC.

According to the Governor, Semenitari’s decision to visit far-flung areas of Cross River, “to see for herself the sufferings of our people, unlike some Chief Executives who would direct their directors to go on such journey and report to them”, stands her out as a special gift from God to humanity

Rivers APC Demands Wike’s Resignation

Rivers APC Demands Wike’s Resignation

….says he must apologize for undermining democracy and running the state like a fieldom

DR IKANYA IBIAMU DAVIES THE APC RS INTERIM CHAIRMANRivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has been told to resign before he completely grounds the State.

The State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made the demand while reacting to the sacking, last week Wednesday by Wike, of four Commissioners and the suspension of the State Head of Service and Special Adviser on Lands for three months. This was followed the next day by the dismissal of Local Government Stole Administrators in the state.

Rivers APC in a statement signed by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, accused Wike of playing to the gallery and likened him to a bad workman who quarrels with his tools.

“We are not bothered if Wike decides to sack all his commissioners since they, just like him, are a bunch of failures. The plot of Chief Wike from the beginning has been to turn himself to an Emperor in a democratic dispensation. The sacking, without giving any reason, of his Commissioners and dissolving his illegal Local Government Sole Administrators exemplifies this vision” the party said in the statement issued on Tuesday in the state capital, Port Harcourt.

The statement called on Wike “to take the honourable path by apologising and resigning now that it is obvious that his dreamy empire is gradually crumbling like a pack of cards and in view of the dangers his misguided vision has caused Rivers State, his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the entire Nigerian Nation.”

Insisting that Wike bulldozed his way into the Government House even though unprepared for governance, Rivers APC said that he must go for the following reasons:

  1. Claiming and re-commissioning of roads and projects successfully executed by his predecessor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
  1. Destruction of the education sector by stopping the scholarship and free education scheme put up by the Amaechi administration to make Rivers State a reference point in Africa, and turning the model educational and health facilities put up in all the local government areas of the state to forests and dens of cultists by not using them and refusing to pay the salaries of the 13,000 teachers employed by the administration of Amaechi.
  1. Destroying the security appliances and strategy put up by Amaechi to make the state crime-free and instead turning the state into a Rivers of blood and appointing suspected fellows with criminal records into his administration without due clearance by the security agencies, thereby causing capital flight and mass exodus of people and corporate bodies from Rivers State.
  1. Running the state as a fiefdom without recourse to democratic principles and bankrupting the state in just over a year in power while also sinking it into monumental debt that will require generation to clear.

Concluding, Rivers APC said: “The evidence clearly shows that Wike is a terrible disappointment to both Rivers State and Nigeria. He has taken incompetence in governance to a new height in Nigeria, turning Rivers State to a Rivers of blood where human lives no longer worth much and where kidnapping, assassination and robbery have become the norms. Wike must go in the interest of the peace and progress of Rivers State”, the party emphasised.

Economic crime should be tackled through global Collaboration and Partnership – Hon. Amaechi

Economic crime should be tackled through global Collaboration and Partnership – Hon. Amaechi

Gov Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi

Gov Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi

Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said economic crime can better be tackled if countries partner each other and share strategic information to stop the network of those who commit such crimes.

Amaechi made the statement Monday while delivering a keynote speech at the opening of the 34th Cambridge University prestigious International Symposium on Economic Crime, at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. The Rt. Hon. Jeremy Wright, the Attorney-General of England and Wales and Advocate General of Northern Ireland also spoke on the first day of the week-long symposium.

In his address titled: “Beyond Blame Game: The Imperative of Tackling Economic Crime Together” Amaechi said economic crime is often committed in an organised manner involving several people, sometimes across countries through multiple jurisdictions. Although such crimes may originate from one country, it often involves the participation of clandestine, criminal networks operating in different countries, playing one role or the other and benefiting from such illicit proceeds.

“At the 7th African Union and Economic Commission for Africa conference that held in Abuja back in 2014, the former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki stated that Africa loses between $50 billion to $60 billion annually as a result of Illicit Financial Flows (IFF). These are said to occur through forms of tax avoidance including transfer pricing or mispricing- depending on which side you are- through which multinationals minimize their tax obligations by shifting their profits from high tax to low tax jurisdiction thereby short-changing some of their host countries especially in the developing world and draining them of legitimate revenue, impeding their projects and denying their population access to basic services,” Amaechi noted.

He further explained that because economic crimes are committed through networks, sometimes spread over countries, It is therefore a global problem that can only be effectively tackled through global collaboration and partnership.

“For this to happen, the public and private sectors especially the banks, must come into collaboration beyond high sounding rhetoric and public relations. Institutions from both developed and developing countries must learn to share information and act swiftly to erode the efficacy of these networks to successfully use any jurisdiction either as transit routes or safe havens for proceeds of economic crime.  Strong, effective, regulatory and enforcement capabilities must be encouraged both domestically and internationally through technical cooperation. Partnerships must be encouraged to provide platforms to share best practices and intelligence and strengthen legislations between jurisdictions.

He also noted that leaders across countries and institutions must take responsibility when economic crime or corruption happens. “That is what it means to be held accountable. In doing so, leadership is expected to do three simple things; perhaps four. They are – upholding the primacy of leadership and political will, insisting on the force of example, enforcing the urgency of incentives and the necessity of sanctions and finally by leveraging on the power of partnership.

“As someone who has been in active politics for more than thirty years, I have learnt that many well intended reforms are possible only if the leader can offer the requisite leadership and muster the right political will. In my country, since our President, Muhammadu Buhari was elected, he did not leave anyone in doubt that the fight against corruption will not only be taken seriously but will form a cardinal plank of his policy direction. So far, he has made several pronouncements that set the tone of his commitment to strengthening anti-corruption agencies to go after anyone who has questions to answer. The President’s resolve was enough to signal all of us, members of his cabinet and the citizenry, that an end has come for the old ways of doing things. Currently, many people who have been indicted in one form of corrupt practice or another are being prosecuted in our courts. That, I believe is the way to show leadership and take responsibility.

“Another important factor is what I refer to as the force of example. There is very little any leader can achieve if he talks the right political talk without offering personal examples. In these days of internet and social media revolution, citizens often spend time to scrutinize the reputation and activities of any leader to find out if they are consistent with what he or she stands for in the media. Essentially leaders must practice what they preach if they expect to be taken seriously both by those within their organisations, state or country or outside,” he stated.

Amaechi again gave the example of President Mohammadu Buhari and his commitment to lead the fight against corrupt practices through personal example.
