Weep No More, Chief Uchendu consoles Gov. Wike

Weep No More, Chief Uchendu consoles Gov. Wike

The Senator-elect representing Rivers East Senatorial District, Chief Andrew Igbonule Uchendu, OON, has advised Wike to stop crying like a baby over the judgement of the Court of Appeal which sacked Senator George Thompson Sekibo, affirming the judgement of the Rivers State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.

Chief Uchendu is highly disappointed at the despicable manner in which Barrister Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, has been disparaging the Independent National Electoral Commision, INEC, and the Nigerian Police, for legitimately participating in the December 10, Legislative Re-run Election in Rivers State.

According to Chief Uchendu, “It is even more troubling that Wike could summon the temerity to discredit the decision of a court of competent jurisdiction, simply because it did not favour him.

“How can Governor Wike, a lawyer by training, accuse INEC and the police of partnering with political actors to rig election in Rivers State, without adducing credible facts to support his bogus claims? Is the media the rightful place to seek redress for perceived wrongs?

“It is very unfortunate that a man who controls the saddle of governance, can descend to such an abysmal level of crass irresponsibility in the public space”, Chief Uchendu stated.

However, since Wike is still weeping profusely over the decision of the Appellate Court to uphold the judgement of the Tribunal, Chief Uchendu is forced to ask him these pertinent questions:

“Was the judiciary involved in excluding the results of Ward Six of Okrika Local Government Area?

“Did the judiciary direct that the result of Emohua Local Government Area should not be collated at Emohua?

“Did the judiciary direct INEC to withold the Senate result of Ikwerre Local Government Area and declare that of the Federal House Of Representatives and that of Rivers State House of Assembly, respectively, for an election that held on the same day?

“Maybe Wike does not know that all that the Tribunal did was to direct that all validly conducted election results be collated and whoever has the majority of validly cast votes should be declared winner?

“It is regrettable to note that Wike whose victory was affirmed by the judiciary at the Supreme Court, is now the same person condemning the affirmation of my victory at the Court of Appeal. How can Wike approbate and reprobate at the same time?”, Chief Uchendu queried.

Chief Uchendu is also surprised at Governor Wike’s fallacious comparison between his (Chief Uchendu) political strength and that of Senator Sekibo.

According to Chief Uchendu, “true to character, Wike is again showing the world how unstable he is. We are all aware of the heinous roles that Wike played in order to ensure that Sekibo – his new found ally, did not emerge as Senator during the administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“It is nothing but fallacy taken too far, for Wike to say that if elections are held twenty times, Senator Sekibo will win me. Is Wike not aware that the voting strength of Emohua Local Government Area, where I hail from, is far bigger than the voting strength of Okirika and Ogu-Bolo (where Sekibo hails from) Local Government Areas, put together?

“Has Wike forgotten that I am the Chairman of Ikwerre National Forum, INF – the Ikwerre political think-tank that threw so many Ikwerre people, including himself, to political limelight? Or is it a case of selective amnesia?

“How then can Sekibo ever beat me in any free and fair contest in Rivers East Senatorial District which has four Ikwerre-speaking Local Government Areas?

“It is very disrespectful of Wike, a man whom I groomed for twelve good years, in my capacity as the Chairman of Ikwerre National Forum, INF, to go about making unfounded utterances, all in a bid to stain my hard-earned political reputation,” Chief Uchendu said.

Chief Uchendu, who was also a former Member of the Federal House of Representatives, finds it worrisome that Wike is inciting the good people of Rivers State against security agencies, simply because Senator Sekibo was legitimately removed from office.

According to the Senator-elect of the Senatorial District that accommodates Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, “Rivers people should not allow themselves to be destroyed on Wike’s altar of political brigandage by disrespecting security personnels who are constitutionally mandated to protect them.

“My victory at the Appeal Court, like I said in several fora, is dedicated to reconciliation, peace and development in Rivers State, and I expect Wike, as the Governor, to toe the same line and allow the State to make progress”, Chief Uchendu opined.

Chief Uchendu also stated that as Wike’s elder brother and political senior, it behooves on him to console him during moments of grief. Therefore, in the words of Ngugi wa Thiong’o, the Senator-elect is using this medium to tell Wike this: “weep not, child”.

Ward Chairman, Vice, Others, Dump APC for PDP In Rivers

Ward Chairman, Vice, Others, Dump APC for PDP In Rivers

…As Obuah Assures Equal Opportunities for All, Says Gov Wike Is God-Sent

The wave of defection currently hitting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has swept Ward 11 in Egbema, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) as the Ward Chairman, Mr. Sheriff Onyenwibe, his vice, Kingsley Obiye and scores of other members have left the party to join the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The handover ceremony which held at Egbema Community Primary School field, Okwuzi Saturday, August 26, 2017 was graced by chieftains of the PDP in ONELGA including the State Chairman of the PDP, Bro. Felix Obuah who arrived the venue with his entourage.  Also present were traditional rulers and opinion leaders of Egbema Community.

Speaking while presenting the decampees to the State party Chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah, leader of the defectors, and former Ward 11 Chairman of APC, Sheriff Onyenwibe thanked the leadership and members of the PDP for the warm welcome accorded them.

“We were deceived into believing that APC would change our lives for the better. They fed us with tissues of lies and promised to turn Nigeria to another Dubai and Japan.

APC leaders in ONELGA operate only from Port Harcourt and never return home to know how we are faring.  All we got in the end was regrets and disappointment.  APC is a failed political party. We are worse off in APC than we were then in the PDP”, he lamented.

The decampees who later surrendered their brooms and the APC flag, laid the materials on the ground, threaded ‘angrily’ on them before setting them ablaze.

The State PDP Chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah while receiving the decampees, assured that the party would give equal opportunity to all of those who have decided to join the PDP.

He stated that the success of the PDP in the State lies in its policy of sincerity, openness and generosity, adding that prejudice does not exist in the PDP.

Bro. Obuah said the party thrives on transparency and does not treat members as old or new, stressing that the PDP umbrella was large enough to accommodate all members who pledge their loyalty to the party and State.

He congratulated the leader of the decampees, and former APC Ward 11 Chairman, Sheriff Onyenwibe, his deputy, Kingsley Obiye and their numerous supporters over what he saw as a bold and courageous decision to quit a failed political party, the APC.

Bro. Obuah enjoined them not to see themselves as decampees any longer, but to be reintegrated and join the progressive train of Governor Nyesom Wike to develop the State.

He noted that Governor Wike had stretched project execution to all nooks and crannies in the State, and had awarded the renovation of Okwuzi General Hospital.

In the words of Obuah: “I want to use this forum to officially receive you into Peoples Democratic Party. I want to assure you that the Leader of the PDP in Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, knows I’m here.

“Egbema will not be left out in the good governance of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike government.  He is God-sent to Rivers people. He has awarded contract for the renovation of Okwuzi General Hospital.

“Today, you (APC decampees) will be with me. Today, we have received you and we are happy you have realised that you were deceived  by the opposition party in the State.”

Obuah charged the PDP ward chairman in the area not to see them “as new members”, but demonstrate fairness to all members.

Earlier, the former APC Ward 11 chairman, Mr. Sheriff Onyenweibeya, apologized to the State PDP for working against them, saying that they were deceived.

He appealed to Obuah to re-admit them into PDP, saying that they were former members of the party before APC leaders deceived and lured them.

Onyenweibeya expressed: “I want to apologize on behalf of the teeming crowd of APC members in Ward 11. We were deceived to abandon our home (PDP) to join them.

“Now, we have realised that we were deceived. We are sorry, we have realised our mistake. We have realised that PDP is the party on ground in this area. We have gone back to our land, our home, PDP. We are appealing to PDP family to, please, receive us”, he appealed.

The State PDP Chairman told the teeming crowd which gathered to witness the event, that Governor Wike had already awarded contract to dualize the Omoku-
Egbema road as well as renovation of the Egbema General Hospital.

The event which also featured the coronation of Eze Kingsley Ugochukwu as the Eze-Eziche II of Ohuu Village in Okwuzi Community, attracted a horde of dignitaries with a thrilling musical performance by the famous Nwabueze and His Stars Band of Egbema.

Buhari’s Directive against IPOB is Hate Order – Says SERG

Buhari’s Directive against IPOB is Hate Order – Says SERG

The South East Revival Group (SERG) has described as hate order, the marching order issued by President Muhammadu Buhari to service chiefs to crush the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Decrying the order issued by the President, in its reaction to the directive, the group in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu strongly condemned the order, saying it was part of plans for ethnic cleansing in Igbo land.

The reaction came at the Weekend after an emergency meeting by the central executive of the socio-political organisation in Enugu.

The statement added that “it is worrisome that a non-violent body like the IPOB should be included in an order to crush violent groups and criminal gangs.

“For us in the SERG, this directive is clearly a hate order, targeted against the people of South East and part of a plot to begin ethnic cleansing in Igbo land.

“Rather than support the on-going effort of South East Governor’s Forum to address the development challenges in the zone, the President Buhari administration has again openly displayed its hatred to the people of the zone.

“Unarmed Igbo people of the South East have been killed, many more injured under the president government for holding an opinion. That is war against humanity.

“We call on the federal government to urgently address the development deficit in the South East region, which is the reason for the renewed agitation in the region.

“The South East is the only zone in Nigeria with the five states and the only part of the country with little or no federal presence.

“We also urge the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to order the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to begin massive rehabilitation of federal roads across the South East zone.

“We believe that it’s time to end the shedding of innocent blood and sowing of seeds that fan the embers of disunity to preserve the country as one indivisible entity”, the group stated.

Wike’s assertion that APC destroyed institutions in Nigeria is false – Rivers APC

Wike’s assertion that APC destroyed institutions in Nigeria is false – Rivers APC

The assertion today by Gov Nyesom Wike that the All Progressives Congress, APC, has destroyed institutions in Nigeria is manifestly false.

The above is the stand of the River State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress APC, in a statement made available to journalists today in Port Harcourt.

According to Rivers APC Spokesman, Mr. Chris Finebone said, “Nigerians know between APC and PDP the party that finished the nation’s institutions and brought us to this sorry pass. Wike needs to reset his assessment faculty and be factual and honest for once.”

It noted that “there is no evidence that INEC and the police are collaborating to favour APC like the PDP, INEC, security agencies collaborated with Wike and Gesila Khan to handover the entire electoral process to Nyesom Wike and the PDP in 2015. Gov. Wike is merely being haunted by his past and his shadows. Let him sort himself out and leave APC alone.”

Mr. Finebone stressed that, “the verdicts handed down by the Appeal Courts recently over the last rerun elections in Rivers State cannot be politicised by Gov. Wike as a means of shoring up morale amongst his party members. He should spare the judiciary his needless scathing criticism. Rivers people and Nigerians are fed up with the governor’s antics of praising the judiciary when judgements favour his interest and lampooning the judiciary when otherwise happens.”

“The APC has taken notice of his subtle threat of violence come 2019. We can only remind him that 2019 won’t be 2015. Never. A word is enough for the wise they say” the statement finally warned.

Wike Goes Dramatic Again; Accuses Amaechi

Posted on August 26, 2017. Filed under: Press Release |

Wike Goes Dramatic Again; Accuses Amaechi

The Inter-ethnic Network for Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi scorns Gov. Wike’s gratuitous and infantile assertion against the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, on a Channels TV program.

The Governor, in another of his frequent histrionics and unveracious statements accused his former boss and predecessor of being the reason for the failed security situation in Rivers State.

It is principally for the sake of the section of the public who were not opportuned to witness the peaceful ambience and quality security situation that characterised Rivers State under the Amaechi administration, that we painfully make it a duty to respond to the spiteful misrepresentation of facts by the Governor on Channels TV.

Expectedly, it is Wike’s trademark to blame Amaechi for every failure and incompetence his government registers, hence, we are not the least surprised at his recent outburst. We consider it as a reflection of the deep-seated angst arising from his recurrent failure at being able to curb the insecurity menace ravaging the State under his watch. Obviously, he lacks the wit to tackle the dwindling or near-absent security situation.

It is expedient to remind Wike and all those who may conveniently want to buy into his grievous flim-flam, that Amaechi dealt squarely with the issue of insecurity during his tenure as Governor of Rivers State. The security situation in the State improved tremendously under the Amaechi administration until May 29, 2015, when he handed over to Governor Wike who has grossly mismanaged the gains of the Amaechi administration in this very sensitive area.

The tremendous and deliberate efforts Amaechi made to ensure that lives and properties were secured are not lost on Rivers people. Our memories still serve us right and we can never forget the laudable initiatives he embarked on to improve security in the State. Even though most of the security structures put in place where dismantled by the former State CP Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu under the auspices of the former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan and Governor Wike, who was then a Junior Minister, because of political vendetta and senseless victimization of Amaechi, vestiges of Amaechi’s exploits in security still exists. The security checkpoints with high resolution closed circuit television cameras at strategic spots on major roads are still a testimony to Amaechi’s efforts towards curbing insecurity.

We still remember the C4i, the special security team trained in Israel for combating crime and insecurity, the frequent townhall meetings and peace parleys undertaken by the Amaechi administration to ensure a viable and robust security system in the State.

Whereas, Amaechi took a firm and tough posture against thugs and militants, the Governor is busy hobnobbing and patronising them. It is therefore, shocking that he now turns around to expect security to improve when he is handling the issue of insecurity with marked levity. It is instructive to affirm that Rivers State never experienced this level of frequent barbaric murder and horrid security situation under Amaechi.

Quite disturbing is the fact that the Wike-led government does not only lack the capacity to initiate good programs, it is also bereft of the ability to manage existing ones. Assuming without conceding that Wike is serious about tackling the growing level of insecurity in the State and honestly does not have the wit to engage it, is it not elementary that the first thing he should do is to improve on the security checkpoints and structures Amaechi bequeathed to him?

It is our strong view that the Governor is the chief contributor to insecurity and criminality in the State. The insecurity being experienced presently in the State is a backlash of the massive arming of political thugs and criminals who prosecuted the 2015 elections for him. He sowed the wind and is now reaping the whirlwind. The Governor should eat the humble pie and device means of compensating those who brought him to power through the guns. He is both the Chief Security Officer and the Chief Security Offender.

We advise the Governor as a matter of urgency to submit himself to his former boss to be tutored on how to douse the menacing insecurity instead of looking for whom to blame his inexcusable failure on.

Wike should realise human lives are sacred and must not be objects of politics. He is therefore, constitutionally obligated to secure lives and properties resign forthwith.

Ubima, Rivers State.

Northern Leaders to PDP: Stop throwing stones at Buhari, APC

Northern Leaders to PDP: Stop throwing stones at Buhari, APC

    Say PDP lacks fresh ideas

Prominent Northern leaders on Saturday refuted claims by some politicians in the country who are branding the All Progressives Congress (APC) government as clueless, commending the ruling party for providing the insight and leadership to achieve prosperity in Nigeria.

The leaders also praised the ruling party for sanitizing the polity, reversing Nigeria’s economic decline and restoring law and order in the country.

“The APC government is not clueless. It is on course to creating an inclusive and broad based economy that offers opportunities and jobs to all our people” the leaders said.

The leaders who were in Abuja to take the temperature of Nigeria and to look back over the past 18 years said Nigeria can only be developed through sacrifice, hard work, dedication and commitment from its people at all levels.

The leaders in a communiqué issued after the meeting in Abuja commended the ruling party for lifting Nigerians out of destitution and presenting a clear policy to tackle the economic challenges in the country.

“APC remains focused and visionary. Nigeria is moving at multiple levels. There is a concentrated effort to purge corruption in the country” the leaders said.

The communiqué was read by the chairman of APC United Front, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa.

The leaders praised the ruling party for rescuing Nigeria from the excesses of democracy under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They described the 16 years of PDP government as a political earthquake in Nigeria’s history.

“There was poverty, falling living standards of the ordinary people, environmental destruction, trouble in North-East, huge unemployment, broken infrastructure and massive corruption. There was decrepit in health and educational institutions. Nigeria’s economic situation suffered decline. PDP lacks fresh ideas” they said.

Specifically, the leaders emphasized how PDP turned the nation into economic mess.

They condemned in strongest terms the egregious display of hatred, narrow-mindedness and meanness by Goodluck Jonathan, Ayo Fayose, Willie Obiano, Nyesom Wike, Femi Fani-Kayode, Ebenezer Babatope, Reno Omokri, Timi Frank and Mr. Pharez Okpere.

The leaders also commended the National Chairman of APC, Chief Odigie-Oyegun for his vision, which is anchored on unity of purpose and the desire to work together in order to move Nigeria to an era of economic and political transformation.

“Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is selfless, disciplined and result oriented. He has become the standard by which political party chairmen are measured in and outside Africa. The APC national chairman is thinking outside the box and consolidating the ruling party.”

The leaders while urging members of the civil society, the press and others not to join critics of President Muhammadu Buhari and APC in damaging Nigeria’s name on the world stage said the disagreement among major political actors in some APC states would not affect the electoral fortune of the party.

“We are opposed to leadership that focuses on enriching itself. APC is giving effect to the will of the people and will continue in Gombe, Taraba, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Bauchi, Katsina, Benue and Jigawa. It will form the next government in Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi Delta, Bayelsa, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun.”

The Agriculture Revolution in the Niger Delta: The story of a Farming General

Posted on August 14, 2017. Filed under: Opinion |

The Agriculture Revolution in the Niger Delta: The story of a Farming General

By Paul Boroh

As an officer in the Army, I took to farming believing that is the future of the country and that on a personal level, I could better sustain my family. Our lands are so fertile that I did not need much fertilizer; the inputs were minimal and the yields were much. Our climate, by God’s grace is predictable; it rains when it should rain and the sun shines when it should; so why not take advantage of what nature has freely given us as Nigerians.

When in July 2015, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed me Special Adviser on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, I had the primary responsibilities of streamlining the Programme and transforming it back on track, working for peace in the Niger Delta and sustainably reintegrating some 30,000 Amnesty beneficiaries back into society. Although we have various integration programmes which include education, vocational training, professional training in Aviation and Maritime, automobile engineering, entrepreneurial training and tourism and hospitality; I had no doubt that the best way to integrate such a huge number of beneficiaries quickly and sustainably, is through aquaculture and agriculture.

However, I also realized that this requires a lot of planning and painstaking implementation; like other programmes, we had to conceptualize, plant, culture and water the ideas to the germination and harvest stages. We approached a number of agencies and embassies especially the Israeli Embassy. We have also gone into partnership with various Agricultural bodies. But as a basic step, we had to get the beneficiaries interested so they can buy into the Programme.

In keying into the Federal Government’s Agriculture Initiative, we presented our ideas and the facts on the ground. The facts are that agriculture creates mass sustainable jobs and empowerment; advanced technology and high yield varieties ensure good harvest, and costs can be drastically reduced by building locally fabricated integrated feed mills which rely entirely on local products. Also, our country of over 180 million people is a huge market in itself and additionally, the ECOWAS (West African Region) provides a market that is more or less limitless. On the national level, we know that in taking to agriculture, the country is moving towards food self- sufficiency and security.

I am happy at the level of enthusiasm for agriculture amongst Amnesty Beneficiaries and to harvest this, we had turned to the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) with an agreement to train an initial one thousand beneficiaries and youths at its Bio-Resource Centre in Odi, Bayelsa State. Unfortunately, budget delays have not allowed us to take full advantage of this agency which uses technology and the principles of science to produce high yields in farming. However, the Presidential Amnesty Office has trained and began to empower Amnesty Beneficiaries in crop farming, fishery and poultry. As at June, 2017, 1,000 Amnesty beneficiaries across the nine Oil-Producing States are being trained in agriculture and will be empowered to establish their own farms. These include 105 Beneficiaries undergoing training in Agro-Business with the Songhai Rivers Initiative at the Songhai Farms, Rivers State, and 100 Beneficiaries training in fish farming under kabocastle Services at its Perecastle Fish Farm, Patani, Delta State. Also, an average of 25 Beneficiaries each are being trained in fish farming in six centres including the Delta State University by Gedisco Energy solutions, Infinite Farms in Ozoro, Delta State and Orus Resources Farm, Aluu, Rivers State.

At the Institute of Oceanography, University of Calabar, Cross Rivers State, 96 Beneficiaries are undergoing training in fish farming. The Ma-Atari Farms, Port Harcourt are training some Amnesty Beneficiaries in agriculture and poultry farming, the Ogbebor Leadership Institute, Ologbo, Edo State is training some in rubber processing, TSC Services is training 24 in General Agri-Business at the Edo State College of Education, Iguoriakhi, Edo State while Eunirusk Investment is training 18 in Cassava, Corn and Oil Palm at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State. Forty eight Amnesty beneficiaries are being trained in crop farming by the Faculty of Agriculture, Imo State University. The training in agriculture is designed as a full value chain ; from farming, production, processing, packaging, marketing to Agri-Business Management.

By our planning, each farm will require the services of at least four farmers. This has the prospect of creating 4,000 farm workers in the Region under this phase. Also, some leaders of the Amnesty Beneficiaries have bought our argument that building houses is not sustainable as they have to be serviced and maintained, but in contrast, taking to agriculture is a money-yielding venture.

So many of them have bought into the agriculture revolution. One of them is into large scale rice farming in Bayelsa State while another which has taken to plantain cultivation, is emerging as the biggest farmer in Bomadi, Delta State. It is not only the consciousness of the Amnesty Beneficiaries that need to be transformed but also that of the Niger Delta and country as a whole; oil is a wasting asset, it may dry up in the foreseeable future. In contrast what the future foresee is that agriculture would enrich us all. So let us start with the basic policy of eating only what we grow, and growing what we eat. Change should begin with each of us.

Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd) is the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme. A professional peace practitioner and now a farmer.

Nigeria Set To Benefit from Deep Sea Mining – Dr. Dakuku

…seeks support on capacity building

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside has stated that Nigeria is set to benefit from the deep sea mining through effective harnessing of the opportunities by working with the International Seabed Authority (ISBA).
The NIMASA DG who made this known at the opening ceremony of the 23rd Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISBA) held in Kingston, Jamaica said that irrespective of the numerous resources in Nigeria, there was the need to work more closely with the ISBA in the area of seabed resources exploration.
Dr. Peterside who led the Nigerian Delegation to the event commended ISBA on its role in the optimal utilization of seabed resources among maritime stakeholders and solicited for assistance in the area of capacity building to survey deep sea and establish data base of mineral resources available for the benefit of all mankind.
He stated further that the Federal Government is currently developing policies that will aid the harnessing of seabed resources and will be working closely with the ISBA.
According to Dr. Peterside, “the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Transportation is developing a country blue economy policy and strategy which will incorporate the sustainable development of the country’s deep seabed resources”.
Speaking further, he said at the moment the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic office has been undertaking hydrographic survey and charting of our maritime area, and added that in the same vein NIMASA is working with Nigerian Navy to effectively enforce the United Nations Convention on the law of the sea and other relevant international maritime instruments to which we are a party around our continental shelf.
He also noted that, while seeking exploitation of the mineral resources within the Seabed off our national maritime jurisdiction, marine environment preservation and protection will continue to be given top priority.
Dr. Dakuku used the opportunity to congratulate Mr. Michael Lodge of the United Kingdom on his appointment as Secretary General of ISBA Council and Eugenio Joao Muianga of Mozambique on his election as President of the Authority’s 23rd session.
He added that Africa is proud of the feat of Eugenio Joao Muianga and pledged that Nigeria is ready to cooperate with and support the work of the Authority while looking forward to benefiting from available opportunities.
The International Seabed Authority is an autonomous international organization established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The Authority, which has its headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica, came into existence on 16 November 1994, upon the entry into force of the 1982 Convention and as at July 25, 2016 it has 168 member countries of which Nigeria is one.

Re: The futility of Dakuku’s Appointment- a treatise by Wike

Posted on August 12, 2017. Filed under: Opinion |

Re: The futility of Dakuku’s Appointment- a treatise by Wike

By Dr Chimele  Eze Amadi

We have read the above titled piece endorsed on behalf of Governor Nyesom Wike by his aide on Electronic Media one Simeon Nwakaudu.

Our first reaction was to ignore the poorly written and misleading treatise  but on a second thought, the need to put the records straight made this response imperative.

First, it is common knowledge that Nwakaudu’s job may be at risk  following the dissolution of the State Cabinet and the endless sacking of Political appointees by the Governor. The timing of the article clearly suggests that the author would have concocted  these lies, half-truths and outright mischief as a smart way of warming his way back to the heart of his pay master. Even though we do not begrudge the author for desperately seeking to retain his job, we had expected him to do so decently. The fear of idleness  should not lead him into concocting wild allegations against the impregnable reputation of Dr.Dakuku Adol Peterside, an acclaimed international figure.

Being a media practitioner, the author cannot claim not to know that the reason Dr.Dakuku Peterside is a household name in Rivers State today is on account of his (Peterside’s) several achievements as Council Chairman, Commissioner for Works and Member of the House of Representatives.Records which scare Wike like  Armageddon.

Assuming his ignorance is pardoned for not knowing those facts which are ordinarily in the public domain, can the author also be forgiven if he  feigns ignorance of the trail blazing achievements of Dr.Peterside since his appointment as the Director-general of NIMASA?Perhaps,it is necessary to remind those suffering from selective amnesia like the author of the following facts:

  • That as Commissioner for Works, Dr.Dakuku Peterside had more projects to his credit than the present Rivers State Government in terms of quality, viability and spread.

It is important to remind the author and his master, Gov Wike that it was during Dr.Dakuku’s reign as Commissioner for Works that nearly all the major roads leading into and out of the state as well as the several internal roads across the LGAs, some of which Wike is resurfacing and inviting  people to commission were initiated, designed and constructed. Nkpogu bridge, Rumuokwurusi – Eneka road,Rumuokwuta-Mgbuoba-Choba and Peter Odili- Abuloma- Akpajo  Roads and flyover just to mention a few, are some of such projects. It is ironical that Wike is working hard to take credit for these and other projects through fanfare. In case the author and his master may have chosen to forget, we wish to further  remind them it was same Dr Dakuku Peterside who initiated and supervised most of the roads constructed in Wike’s village, Rumuepirikom and LGA, Obio/Akpor.

  • That as a member, House of Representatives, Dr.Dakuku Peterside personally sponsored more local and over sea scholarships for the youths of Rivers state than the government headed by Governor Nyesom Wike. It is very sad to recall that  Gov Nyesom Wike  has the ignoble record of recalling  Rivers youths studying abroad and  disbanding the State’s Academic scholarships instituted by the Rotimi Amaechi government . Indeed, Wike’s hatred for education is the reason he  has done everything humanly possible to destroy education in the state . Under Wike, the free Education policy and the model schools constructed by the immediate past administration have been abandoned  for two years running, Governor Wike’s government has been unable to draw up clear-cut direction and policies on Education. We expected that he would have been bold enough to copy from Dr Peterside’s famous Roadmap to prosperity.
  • That as the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside’s achievements in the Maritime sector  has brought honor and pride to Nigeria ,the reason for which the African Maritime Administrators Association unanimously elected him Chairman during its conference recently in Abuja, the first time Nigeria would occupy such position and host such strategic conference in more than 50 years.

It is common knowledge that under Dr.Dakuku Peterside, NIMASA has distinguished itself in its primary responsibility of Port and Flag state control functions. By re-committing itself to the enforcement of the Cabotage regime,  NIMASA has opened a vista of opportunities for Nigerians. The new NIMASA management has successfully moved away from the usual public perception as a corrupt agency into a world class Maritime regulator playing leading roles in  putting in place a new maritime  security architecture to secure Nigerian Waterways against Sea pirates and other criminal elements,a  feat that was recently acknowledged by the Federal Government and other Maritime stakeholders.

  • That as D-G NIMASA, Dr.Dakuku Peterside does not move around with Naval personnel neither does he have a need to. A man like him who is at home amongst his people would not need Naval personnel to protect him. He is by far more popular and loved in Rivers state and across the country than a governor who has made it a duty  to under develop the state by  promoting insecurity, massive corruption and owing Pensioners and workers under the guise of unending biometrics.

The fact of Dr Peterside’s acceptability in his home base is supported  by the fact that his party, the APC has never lost elections in Opobo/Nkoro LGA since the abracadabra elections perpetuated by Gov.Wike and others in 2015 through Mrs Patience Jonathan. The loss of the LGA Assembly seat to the PDP at the Court of Appeal in very mysterious circumstances is a puzzle the Nigerian judiciary is yet to unravel. We challenge the author to show evidence on the contrary to these facts.

  • That at no point did Dr.Dakuku Peterside ever escape with results of elections in Ikwerre LGA neither will there ever be need to. Being the LGA of the Honorable Minister for Transportation, Rt.Hon.Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and considering his monumental achievements in the area as Governor, it is self-over reaching for the PDP to imagine it can manipulate the mandate of Ikwerre people as freely given to the APC
  • That describing the Buhari/Osinbajo led Federal Government as a failed Government smacks of his master’s mischievous nature.A character who only recently sought the Acting President, Prof.Osinbajo to commission some substandard, low-key projects to turn the around the next minute to disparage that same government fits exactly into Gov.Wike’s dubious nature as an ordinary con man who deceived the Chief Justice of Nigeria into flagging off construction on parcels of land being contested before a competent Court of Law.
  • That we urge Mr.Simeon Nwakaudu to advice his master, Gov.Nyesom Wike to focus on redeeming whatever is left of his already battered image. Rivers people eagerly await explanations on the allegations of attempted murder, forgery and manipulation of the judiciary leveled against the government by its former ally, Mr Livingstone Wechie

Our advice to Governor Nyesom Wike whom by all means appear confused is to set pride aside and consult Dr.Dakuku Adol Peterside on how best to tackle the massive insecurity, flooding, under development, unemployment, massive exodus of companies from Rivers state, financial secrecy and recklessness which have become the hallmarks of  the state under his watch.

Finally, we re-assure Rivers people in particular and Nigerians in general  that their worthy Maritime Administrator, Dr.Dakuku Adol Peterside would continue to make them proud both at home and abroad through greater accomplishments and ingenious creativity, he is too focused to be distracted by the antics of the author and his pay masters.
